Cabrillo National Monument

Valerie and I are always looking for National Parks and monuments to explore. While in San Diego California we decided to visit this great place. The monument is located on the peninsula with the Naval Base at Point Loma. There are some photos of the Naval and Marine cemetery.

Cabrillo National Monument is located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California. It commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. This event marked the first time that a European expedition had set foot on what later became the West Coast of the United States. The site was designated as California Historical Landmark #56 in 1932

San Diego Zoo

Posted by FastGlass on September 4, 2016
Posted in: Out West 2016. 2 Comments

I have been hearing about the San Diego Zoo since Val and I got married. She was stationed in San Diego when she was in the Navy and visited the zoo regularly. She always said it was one of the finest in the USA and I think she may be right. We spent most of the day touring as much of the zoo as we could, however there was too much to see in one day. We must have taken hundreds of photos but as to not bore you we only present these as an appetizer.

Mountain Springs Station Site also known as the Desert View Tower.

Leaving Arizona and driving through the most southern part of California  on Interstate 8 we came upon this way station and another surprise…the “Coyotes Flying Saucer Repair Shop”. You never know when you might need to get your saucer fixed…maybe when you come down from what ever you’ve been smokin’. Directions are below.

Saguaro National Park

Posted by FastGlass on August 31, 2016
Posted in: Out West 2016. 2 Comments

Saguaro National Park is in southern Arizona. Its 2 sections are on either side of the city of Tucson. The park is named for the large saguaro cactus, native to its desert environment. In the western Tucson Mountain District, Signal Hill Trail leads to petroglyphs of the ancient Hohokam people. In the eastern Rincon Mountain District, Cactus Forest Drive is a loop road with striking views of the desert landscape.

Some of these cacti can reach heights of between 30 and 50 feet. The arms of the saguaro develop after the age of 75 years.

Pima Air & Space Museum

Tucson Arizona was just a stopping point on our way to California but there were some unique attractions. I was wanting to visit the Aircraft Boneyard (the largest in the world) but again it was closed on the day we wanted to visit.

The concept for the Pima Air & Space Museum began in 1966 during the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the creation of the United States Air Force. Earlier the commanders of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) the forerunner to today’s Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) recognized that the historic World War II and 1950s era aircraft stored on the base were rapidly disappearing into smelters and that the flames were consuming not just metal, but the aviation heritage of the country. On their own initiative base officials began to set aside examples of the many types of aircraft stored in MASDC’s yards. These planes were placed along the base’s fence line so that the public could see them through the fence. The display quickly became very popular with the local community, but viewing the aircraft through the fence was somewhat unsatisfying.

Below are just a few of the collections at the Pima Museum. Many more were on the tarmac but was closed on the day we were there.

Mission San Xavier del Bac White Dove of the Desert

A National Historic Landmark, San Xavier Mission was founded as a Catholic mission by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692. Construction of the current church began in 1783 and was completed in 1797.

The oldest intact European structure in Arizona, the church’s interior is filled with marvelous original statuary and mural paintings. It is a place where visitors can truly step back in time and enter an authentic 18th Century space.

The church retains its original purpose of ministering to the religious needs of its parishioners.

The Definition of Vacation

Posted by FastGlass on August 28, 2016
Posted in: About. Leave a comment

I think it is about time for someone to redefine “Vacation”. The old definition, the way I understood it, was to take a few days off for a relaxing time, give or take a few words. The new definition, take a few days off for a relaxing time – but first drive 2 days almost non stop to get to the vacation spot. Breaking the bonds of Texas is quite difficult if you are traveling east to west from Jefferson. It is 801 miles to El Paso and there was not much to see along the road until we approached the mountains near El Paso then the scenery was a little better. One thing you don’t realize is that from Jefferson to El Paso there is a rise in elevation of about 3400 ft. Well, we finally made it to Tucson Arizona, where the adventure begins, so stay tuned and I will try to offer up some photos to excite your visual sense’s.

Boarding the bus at the Captain Cook hotel in the early morning, was refreshing in the cool morning air. After a short wait it was all aboard’and a short drive to the Alaska Railway Station. Alaska is the only state to own it’s own railroad. Aboard the coach we sat in the viewing car with glass all around for a terrific view. Our tour guide was taking his last ride as a guide with Princess Cruise Line. He on to a new job in Seattle after spending 16 years as a guide.

Exit Glacier

Posted by FastGlass on August 19, 2016
Posted in: Alaska. Leave a comment

Exit Glacier is a glacier derived from the Harding Icefield in the Kenai Mountains of Alaska.

It received its name because it served as the exit for the first recorded crossing of the Harding Icefield in 1968. In the spring of 1968, the first documented mountaineering party succeeded in crossing the Harding Icefield. Ten people were involved in the crossing, which went from Chernof Glacier east to Resurrection Glacier (Later renamed Exit as the newspaper reported that the group would be descending the “Exit Glacier”)
